Kalathos Pot – Classic Terracotta Planter

The Kalathos Pot is a small hand-built vessel from our Tuscan Sun collection, finished in a mossy green that looks like it spent a decade outdoors.

Tapered Body, Flared Rim

A kalathos was the basket vessel of the ancient Aegean, and this outline follows it. The body narrows as it rises, so the widest point sits low, then the top breaks outward into a thick collar. That contrast is the design: a Tapered Terracotta Planter that would read plain without the flare, a Flared Rim Terracotta Planter that would look top-heavy without it. As a Greek Terracotta Pot it earns the name through proportion, not ornament.

A Patina That Reads Like Old Bronze

The green is not uniform, and should not be. It pools dark in the hollows, thins to chalk on the high spots, and breaks at the rim and lower edge where pink clay shows through. Rust flecks and dark inclusions sit in the surface. The ridges left by the maker's fingers are still there, which separates a Handmade Terracotta Pot from anything molded.

Aged Color Assortment

These ship as an aged color assortment, so one may lean bluer, another grayer, another more worn. Every Handcrafted Clay Planter weathers its own way. Two or three together look intentional in a way one alone does not, the argument for treating these as Terracotta Garden Pots you collect rather than buy singly.

Where to Use It

Small enough for a table, a windowsill, a step beside a door. Cut stems suit it: yellow blooms, olive branches, anything silver-leaved against the green. As a Mediterranean Terracotta Planter it belongs near stucco, weathered wood, or stone. Used as an Outdoor Terracotta Planter, keep it under a porch roof, and bring it in before a hard freeze, since a vessel this size holds too little soil to survive one wet. Pair it with the Pithos Pot, or see our Greek Terracotta Planters Planters for larger shapes.

Know More About Kalathos Pot

What is the best way to plant it?

Treat it as a cachepot. Keep the plant in its nursery liner, lift the liner out to water, let it drain, then set it back inside. Water never sits against the clay, and you can swap plants with the seasons without repotting anything.

Is the verdigris a glaze, and will it wear off?

It is an applied aged finish rather than a poured glaze, which is why it looks weathered, not glossy. It will not peel in sheets, though high points soften with rain and handling and more terracotta shows at the collar over the years. Wipe with a damp cloth, skip abrasive pads.

What actually fits in something this small?

One plant, not an arrangement. A small nursery pot drops straight in: a haworthia, a jade cutting, a herb start, an African violet indoors. Skip deep-rooted plants and anything tall enough to tip it, since the narrow base offers little resistance.

If I order more than one, will they match?

No, and that works in your favor. Each pot weathers differently, so a group reads as a collection gathered over time rather than a matched set. Cluster them in odd numbers and vary what you put in them.
