A Small Pithos in Aged Terracotta

The Shape Comes From Ancient Greece
A pithos was the storage jar of the ancient Mediterranean, used for oil, grain, and wine. This piece keeps the outline: wide belly, a shoulder pulling in sharply, a thick flared collar at the mouth. As a Greek terracotta pot it earns the name through form, not decoration.
Whitewashed Finish, Visible Handwork
The surface reads chalky and pale, closer to old lime wash than raw clay, with pink-orange terracotta breaking through at the rim and wherever the finish wore thin. Tool scars, a mouth slightly out of round, shallow gouges in the wall. That is what a handmade terracotta pot looks like when nobody sands away the evidence, and at three feet it passes for an antique terracotta planter.
