A Weathered Jar Built to Stand Alone
The Olive jar planter comes from our Chateau De Maisons collection, a tall storage-jar form in Atlantis Sky, made to be looked at as much as planted.
Shoulder High, Base Narrow
The body climbs from a small foot, widens to a shoulder near the top, then pulls in sharply to a short neck with a flared collar. That is the classic oil jar outline, and it is why a tall outdoor planter in this shape draws the eye upward like a column. Nothing is applied or carved. The effect comes from proportion, which separates this shape from a scaled-up flower pot.
Atlantis Sky, Up Close
The glaze reads slate blue from across the garden and breaks up as you approach. Pale mineral mottling spreads across the shoulder like lichen on stone, thinning to bare clay and pooling dark in the hollows. No two leave the kiln alike, so a handmade ceramic planter this size is one of a kind. Ask us for photos of the exact jar before it ships.
Two Sizes, and Why Pairs Work
Both sizes sell as single pots, and buying two planters in this size range takes ten percent off. That matters, because a large garden planter of this height does its best work in pairs: one either side of a gate, a driveway, or a flight of steps. Alone, it belongs at the end of a sightline.
Planted or Empty
Many owners leave it empty, a fair choice for a decorative jar planter with a narrow neck. As a decorative outdoor planter it works as sculpture against hedging, gravel, or a stone wall. If you plant it, keep it simple: trailing rosemary, an upright olive, or seasonal stems through the collar. See the Ancient Amphora Large Planter for a similar silhouette, or browse our Chateau De Maisons range.
Know More About Olive Jar
What is an olive jar used for in a garden?
What is an olive jar used for in a garden?
Historically it stored oil and grain. In a garden it works as a focal point rather than a container: marking an entrance, closing a view at the end of a path, or standing where a statue might otherwise go.
Can you plant inside a jar with a narrow neck?
Can you plant inside a jar with a narrow neck?
Yes. Fill the lower body with gravel so you are not wasting soil on depth roots never reach, then plant into the top third. A drop-in nursery pot resting at the shoulder also works and makes seasonal swaps easy.
Where should a large urn planter be placed?
Where should a large urn planter be placed?
Somewhere it reads as deliberate: flanking a gate or steps, where two paths meet, or against a plain wall that backs the silhouette. Leave clear space around it, since a large outdoor ceramic planter this tall loses its effect when crowded.
Does it need to come indoors in winter?
Does it need to come indoors in winter?
It is built for year-round outdoor use. Avoid water sitting inside through a freeze, so cover or tip it if you leave it empty, and set any handcrafted outdoor planter on pot feet so the base drains.
