The Classic Italian Terra Cotta Shape

The Deroma Heavy Rim Pot belongs to the Italian Terra Cotta collection, and it is the shape most people picture when imagining a classic terracotta planter pot.

The Heavy Rim and Tapered Profile

The rim rolls outward into a thick collar, then steps down to a narrower band, reading as architecture rather than a thin lip. Walls taper cleanly to a smaller base, with one raised ridge a third of the way up. A true round terracotta planter from any angle.

Unglazed Clay, Fired in Italy

The clay is left unglazed, moving from warm orange to deeper brick where the kiln ran hotter. Matte, so it soaks up afternoon light and darkens when wet. No two pieces match, which is the point of a handcrafted terracotta pot. An Italian terracotta planter fired this hot stays dense but porous, and that porosity is the case for a traditional terracotta planter: roots get air, soil rarely stays swampy.

Where to Place It

Two of the 20.5" flanking a front door is the easiest win. Sunk into a bed, this garden planter pot lifts one specimen above the perennials, and as a Mediterranean garden pot it suits a gravel courtyard, where a decorative sphere at the base finishes the group. An outdoor planter first, though the smallest two go indoors on a saucer.

What to Plant

Deep enough for shrubs, not just annuals. In the 16.5", plant Endless Summer hydrangea or 'New Gold' lantana. The 20.5" and 24.5" hold a 'Little Ollie' dwarf olive or 'Green Velvet' boxwood. As a garden container for edibles, a 'Bush Early Girl' tomato fits the 24.5".

Watering and Winter Care

Because it is a terracotta pot with drainage hole, water clears fast, and porous walls pull out more besides. Water more often in July and August than with glazed pottery. An outdoor terracotta pot standing in water through a freeze will crack, so in zone 6 and colder, raise it on feet.

Know More About Deroma Heavy Rim Pot

Does unglazed clay dry out faster than glazed pottery?

Noticeably. Water leaves through the walls as well as the drain hole, so in peak heat plan one extra watering per week in the 16.5" and 18.5". A one inch layer of bark mulch on the surface cuts evaporation in hot inland zones.

Which size suits a pair at my front door?

The 20.5 inch is the safe choice for a standard 36 inch doorway with a step or two below it. Move up to the 24.5 inch if the entry is wide, covered, or set back from the street, since a smaller pot reads underscaled from the curb. Two of one size beats mixing sizes.

Do I need a saucer?

On soil or gravel, no. On a wood deck, stone patio, or any indoor floor, yes, because the porous base passes moisture through and leaves a ring. Pair the saucer with pot feet so the drain hole never sits in standing water.
